If you have an upset stomach, flu could be the cause. Viral
Gastroenteritis is one of the most commonly occurring upset stomach flu. This is the inflammation of the
gastrointestinal tract. It is also called stomach virus, gastric flu and winter
diarrhea.
Viral infection is the main cause of
upset stomach flu.
Astrovirus, calcivirus, rotovirus and adenovirus are the chief causative agents
for causing upset stomach
flu. These viruses find a way inside the human body
through the oral- passage. Eating contaminated and stale food or drinking
unhealthy water can cause the upset stomach flu virus
to enter the human body. Here it acclimatizes to the body’s condition and
incubates for long. Depending upon the body’s resistance, the virus seems to
affect the individual and hence the time of fever caused by the virus could
vary anytime between 3-10 days.
Stomach flu is reported to cause
approximately six million deaths around the globe every year. More than 15
million people with symptoms of upset stomach flu are hospitalized every
year.
Rotovirus is the virus which seems to
be most active in case of upset
stomach flu. Diarrhea is the consequence of the infection
of rotovirus. This virus is also very active with children under 5 years of
age. Upset stomach, pain in the belly and persistent diarrhea are the most
visible symptoms of stomach flu. Calcivirus also affects all ages and groups
equally. This virus is responsible for vomiting, tiredness, body ache and
diarrhea. Adenovirus is most active in children under the age of two and does
the most damage. Astrovirus is active with people with suppressed immunity.
Since this virus is very active in winter, it is also called winter virus.
Once the virus enters the human body,
it causes flu symptoms like diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, upset stomach,
abdominal cramps and muscle pain.
You may also feel feeble and suffer
from persistent fever. Though diarrhea is not considered fetal, dehydration
could be. Upset
stomach flu can be combated by maintaining a regular
intake of water, fluids and electrolytes. The idea is to make up for the loss
of the watery fluids from the body.
Yoghurt and probiotics can really help
you fight the upset
stomach flu. Many a times, when the watery losses are
grave, intravenous drip could be advised.
It’s always advised to follow a healthy
eating habit and good sanitation to say unharmed in case of upset stomach flu. You should not share utensils
and appliances with flu infected people. Make sure your hands, silverwares and
dishes are properly washed before they come in contact with the food.
Dehydration is one of the major
symptoms of upset stomach flu.In
severe cases, blood may occur in the vomit or stool. In such a case you must
